The Laurier Curling High Performance Centre offers a range of resources and expertise for a wide range of needs, including the coaching and development of high-performance Varsity and Junior Varsity teams resident at Laurier, coaching assistance with external high-performance teams, development of younger bantam and junior curlers, and clinics to assist competitive club teams in improving their skills. All coaches at the Centre are NCCP certified and have years, if not decades, of coaching experience.
The Laurier Golden Hawks Curling High Performance Centre is based out of the K-W Granite Club, located at 99 Seagram Drive in Waterloo, Ontario. The Granite Club is conveniently located just 150 meters from the Wilfrid Laurier campus. There are two sheets of ice dedicated to the program from 9:00am to 11:00am on Sunday mornings. Other times during the week may be negotiated provided ice time can be acquired at the Granite Club. Failing that, ice time at other clubs may be utilized if ice time at the Granite Club cannot be found.
In 2011-2012, our first season of operation, interested rinks can book on-ice or off-ice sessions for assistance in whatever areas of need they identify. The Centre will then try to schedule a session on a first-come, first-served basis. In year two of operation, the Centre plans to take on a limited number of rinks as Centre-affiliated teams, which will give these selected teams additional, on-going access to the Centre’s various services. Rinks who affiliate with the Centre may bring their own coach with them. If they are in need of a coach, the Centre may be able to help them find one.
As the Hawks Curling HPC Centre grows and evolves over time, the booking process and services will be modified to better meet the needs of the curling community.
Specific services offered by the Centre include:
- access to certified coaching expertise;
- technical skills: delivery, brushing, split timing, ice reading;
- off-ice fitness programs;
- strategy and tactics;
- access to introductory sports psychology;
- training and consulting in team dynamics;
- video analysis using either Dartfish or V1 Home;
- clinics, seminars, private or team sessions.
